The moniker xPolifreda was given to the hybrids between Polianthes and Manfreda and so we’re limited by the prior publication, but oh how we wish it had been xManianthes instead! We have been exploring this intersection for some time, and have a number of plants resulting from these crosses we will be introducing in the future. This introduction is [(Manfreda x Polianthes) x Polianthes], and appears in habit and flower much like Polianthes, with its Coppertone scented blush/cream flowers on 30” stems. The Manfreda influence comes in the form of a conspicuous blue flush to the foliage, which has us unable to resist the Simpson’s reference in the name. It has exceptional vigor, flowers heavily and offsets quickly. Bare tuber until they break dormancy at which point they will be potted in quarts. The Manfreda virginica influence likely makes the plant more hardy than straight Polianthes, but we haven’t trialed in other climes so assume Z7b/8.
